Chinese writing is ideographic. There are thousands of ideograms each of which expresses a concept or word. It is unlike European and Indian languages which are phonetic. The ideogram has an about 14 characters which are selected from a large number. If you know Chinese you can recognize the character, if not it is very difficult. The advantage of Chinese writing is that the Ideograms are common for each Chinese language so two literate people who speak different Chinese Dialects can communicate by writing.
Now only mandarin is spoken in China so the communist regime is doing away with Ideograms and introducing Roman alphabet. In spite of this Chinese writing was once considered for computer translation but abandoned as the Chinese key board requires too many keys. On computers now ideograms can be written. Maybe the Chinese will reintroduce Ideographic writing.
